Otsuka Pharmaceutical Environmental Policy
As a global healthcare company and a responsible corporate citizen, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will always take account of the global environment when it pursues its business activities. Otsuka Pharmaceutical will work on environmental issues with its trademark qualities of independence, proactiveness and creativity.
1. Provide products and services that are friendly to the environment
At all stages, from product research, development and production through to distribution, sales, and disposal, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will assess environmental impacts, and formulate and implement eco-friendly measures.
2. Contribute to a low-carbon society
Recognizing that there are limited global resources, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society by restricting emissions of greenhouse gases and conserving resources. Otsuka Pharmaceutical will reduce carbon dioxide emissions through energy conservation and by improving the productivity of resource use.
3. Contribute to a sound material-cycle society
Natural resources have finite availability, so Otsuka Pharmaceutical will minimize their consumption by reducing waste discharge and by recycling resources through reuse, material recycling and thermal recycling, along with suitable disposal.
4. Conserve biodiversity
Otsuka Pharmaceutical will continue to pursue initiatives for the promotion of biodiversity in order to maintain diversity of ecosystems, species, and genetic materials.
Otsuka Pharmaceutical will comply with environmental legislation and observe social norms. In addition, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will respond to society’s expectations and independently set itself further, stricter voluntary standards and rules, with which Otsuka Pharmaceutical will then work hard to comply.
6. Actively engage in social initiatives
Otsuka Pharmaceutical will engage in broad social communication, and as a good corporate citizen, it will actively pursue ongoing social initiatives. Otsuka Pharmaceutical will focus on the three key themes of “health,” “the natural environment,” and “local communities” to pursue initiatives for the general betterment of human health and well-being.
7. Enhance risk management
Otsuka Pharmaceutical will work to minimize potential risk to the environment from sudden accidents and emergencies, through preparation of crisis management plans and implementation of risk management programs.

|Provide products and services that are friendly to the environment
||Carry out LCA analysis and use this to enhance the environmental aspects of our product design.
||Improve our understanding of raw material suppliers’ situation. Work with our business partners to ensure that their actions in areas such as human rights, labour and environment are in line with Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s CSR procurement principles.
|Contribute to a low-carbon society
||Japan: Maintain total CO2 emissions in 2020 below the 2010 baseline.
① Factories: Reduce energy intensity by 1.8% per annum against the 2010 baseline
② Offices: Reduce energy intensity by 20% below the 2010 baseline.
③ Research centers: Reduce energy intensity 1% per annum against the 2010 baseline.
|Overseas: Develop a CO2 emission profile for major business locations. Work with each business site to implement CO2 emission reduction activities.
||Reduce energy intensity from transportation by 1% per annum on a 5-year rolling average.
||Move more than 85.5% of our vehicle fleet to environmentally friendly models by 2018, and encourage more fuel efficient driving methods.
|Contribute to a sound material-cycle society
||Japan: Achieve a recycling rate of more than 99% across the company (includes thermal recycling) – obtaining ‘Zero Emission’.
Maintain a final disposal rate at our 2013 level (96% reduction against the 1996 baseline).
|Overseas: Develop wastewater and solid waste profiles of our key overseas business locations. Implement activities to reduce waste and improve recycling rates in cooperation with each site.
||We already have a number of initiatives in this area such as biotopes and tree-planting. We will work to further understand our business activities’ influence on biodiversity, and draw up a set of biodiversity principles and a programme of activities to reduce any negative impacts.
|Actively engage in social initiatives
||We will develop a set of principles for our social contribution activities, and actively implement new Otsuka-style initiatives.
|Compliance with standards and rules. Enhancement of risk management.
|Japan: Using our ISO14001 system, enhance our compliance and risk management. Broaden the scope of our ISO14001 system to include all of our factories, research centres and offices.
|Overseas: Strengthen our ability to check compliance with environment rules and regulations at our overseas business locations. Develop internal standards in key areas and work to strengthen compliance.
|To enhance all of the above activities, we will implement an environmental education programme.
||We will implement a comprehensive environmental education programme over a 3-year period, using Otsuka’s “Environment School”.
- ■LCA：Life Cycle Assessment：a method for assessing the environmental impact of products and services. Mainly used to assess the environmental impact of an individual product through each stage of its production, distribution, sale, use and disposal cycle.
- ■CSR Procurement: is when environmental and social issues are added to the criteria for selecting raw materials, products and services
- ■Zero Emission: This is a concept first proposed by the United Nations University in 1994. By ensuring that waste is used for a productive purpose, and by reducing waste generation, the amount of waste sent to landfill or incinerated can be drastically reduced. Otsuka Pharmaceutical uses a Recycling Rate of 99% as its definition of “Zero Emission”.

- ■Energy intensity: the amount of energy used per unit of output.
At Otsuka Pharmaceutical, the energy intensity of our production division is based on energy used per item of final product. For our office and research centres, it is based on energy used per unit of floor space.
