Rather than holding the bottle with the ring towards you and pulling up, it is easier to open it with the ring facing away. Use your finger to pull the ring up and towards you (as shown in the illustration left).

What is the best way to open the bottle?

Hold the bottle with the ring facing away from you, and pull the ring up and forward.
The opening method is written in Japanese on the side of the cap.
