Group A hemolytic streptococcus: diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis

One technique is to culture group A hemolytic streptococcus using a sample taken from the focal site, such as the throat. However, as this method takes time, rapid diagnostic kits are often used. These kits give a result in 5 to 10 minutes through the reaction of a reagent with a sample taken from the throat using a cotton swab.

Treatment

Penicillin-based antibiotics are used. While dosage and administration differ depending on the prescription, it is important to keep taking the medication according to your doctor's directions (10 days for penicillin-based antibiotics). Cephalosporin antibiotics and macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin and clarithromycin are used in patients allergic to penicillin.
