Fluctuation in blood-borne female hormones during pregnancy and nursing

During pregnancy, in addition to the energy needs of the mother, it is necessary to secure additional energy for fetal development. Also, while the female hormones estrogen and progesterone increase during pregnancy, they then rapidly decrease after childbirth.
Postpartum depression is seen in 10-20% of females between 3-6 months after childbirth, and this is thought to be related to the rapid hormonal changes after childbirth.
