Corporate Philosophy

Innovative products for people worldwide

‘Otsuka - people creating new products for better health worldwide’

This phrase embodies the following three principles:

  • Creating innovative products through our own ingenuity
  • Supporting human health and well-being
  • Contributing to people around the world

Based on this corporate philosophy and inheriting the Otsuka ethic of “Creativity and Proof through Execution,” at Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (OPC) we strive every day to utilize our Group’s unique assets and skills to develop innovative and creative products which contribute to healthy lives for people worldwide. Today, OPC’s innovative and creative pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals Products are supporting the lives of people around the globe.

OPC continually seeks to cultivate an ethic and vitality appropriate to an enterprise involved with human life. Adopting a global perspective, the people at OPC strive to build a symbiotic relationship with local communities and the natural environment while pursuing the goal of contributing to better health and more prosperous lives for people everywhere.

Monuments embodying the Otsuka Group’s corporate philosophy: Giant Tomato Trees, Bent Giant Cedar, and Floating Stone

Three monuments adorn OPC’s employee training center, the Human Resource Development Institute, and Vega Hall (an assembly hall). These monuments were created to encourage employees to study diligently and make great leaps in the future and to invite them to embrace the challenge of reaching their full potential.

The first monument is a black stone “floating” above the fountain waters in a pool in front of the facilities. This miraculous spectacle attracts the interest of visitors and induces an unusual sense of liberation detached from everyday life.

The second monument, located inside the entrance to Vega Hall, is a bent giant cedar with another cedar lying atop, appearing unsteady at first glance. But, the magnificent balance dispels our stereotypes. Here, the preconceived notion that cedars are straight does not apply. Some observers may experience what it means to have preconceptions fall apart. They may also feel that the process of creativity is not necessarily comfortable and easy.

The last monument is in the tomato hall. Looking up at the ceiling, one sees thousands of bright red tomatoes growing abundantly on only a few tomato trees overlooking visitors. Each tomato tree is said to grow branches stretching over 10 meters at the time of peak growth.

However, these tomatoes are not a special variety; they are a common variety, merely grown using hydroponic cultivation. Tomato plants are usually grown planted in the ground. And, the tomato plants in this monument would grow to no more than the size of normal tomatoes if they too were planted in the ground. In other words, normal ground (soil) seems to contain something that most likely halts plant growth or keeps the tomatoes at an appropriate size.

Actually, this “normal ground” (soil) is a metaphor for everyday life. Perhaps everyday life contains something that inhibits our growth. The message of the tomatoes grown by Otsuka Pharmaceutical is: “You have the possibility to grow much more if only you free yourself from what you are accustomed to and be creative with the means to grow.” At the same time, the tomatoes also allude to the “nutrition” that can be called the base of Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s business.

The word “creating” in the Otsuka Group’s corporate philosophy of “Otsuka - people creating new products for better health worldwide” is the foundation of everything we do. These three monuments continue to convey our commitment to creativity — to employees and visitors alike.
