Winner Announced for the 2015 Young Innovator in TB Research Award

The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and Otsuka Pharmaceutical on December 6 announced the winner of the 2015 Young Innovator in TB Research Award during the 46th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Cape Town, South Africa.

Dr. Gregory Fox from Sydney, Australia was presented the award at the closing ceremony of the conference in recognition of his work as the country director of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Vietnam from 2009 - 2013. In this work Dr. Fox pursued a new direction on TB control in a highly endemic country, implementing a randomized-controlled-trial screening over 25,000 household TB contacts (the ACT2 study) in close partnership with the Vietnam National TB Program.

Dr. Fox has a strong commitment to research capacity building and postgraduate medical education, and has contributed to the development of evidence-based health policies in resource-limited settings. He is an investigator on several ongoing public health and clinical studies of TB screening and prevention in Vietnam and works as a respiratory physician at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia.

The Young Innovator in TB Research Award was established through a global partnership between Otsuka Pharmaceutical and The Union and the 2015 award is its second consecutive year. The award is administered by The Union with a grant provided by Otsuka. Award recipients are selected by a panel of experts organised independently by The Union.

The aim of the award is to stimulate the advancement of innovative approaches in TB control and patient care. Eligibility for the award is open to young clinicians who have significant documented achievements in the formulation and implementation of clinical and operational research in the field of TB or multidrug-resistant TB.
