Tokushima Itano Factory Achieves Zero Emissions Status

Tokyo, Japan -- Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan; President: Tatsuo Higuchi; Phone) has announced the publication of the 2007 edition of the company's Environmental and Social Report.

Beginning in 2003, Otsuka Pharmaceutical has published annual Environmental and Social Reports with a focus on accurate information and ease of understanding. Subtitled "Otsuka Academy of Environment", the Environmental and Social Report is positioned as an environmental education tool for employees. In principle, the Environmental and Social Report covers only those initiatives that lend themselves to the establishment of mid- to long-term objectives, subsequent action, and tracking and reporting of results. The Environmental and Social Report 2007 contains a "History of Environmental and Social Initiatives" chronicling the past five years, and introduces current environmental issues and future initiatives in an easy-to-understand format.

Following in the footsteps of the Tokushima Wajiki Factory, which achieved Zero Emission status in 2005, the Tokushima Itano Factory implemented comprehensive waste control measures to achieve Zero Emissions status in 2006. The Tokushima Factory area is also targeting energy conversion, and has introduced a co-generation system that uses city gas to generate electricity while effectively utilizing heat generated in the process. The introduction of this co-generation system is expected to result in a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions. The Environmental Task Force for office divisions established in fiscal 2006 initiated a company-wide 'Eco-Drive' movement targeting all sales vehicles and implemented summer 'light casual' days as part of efforts to minimize the environmental burden of office activities. Focusing on efficient use of resources, the June 2007 introduction of new 500ml ECO-BOTTLES of Pocari Sweat has resulted in a 30% reduction in container weight. During the period covered by the report, CO2 emissions were reduced on a revenue unit basis by 18.1% compared to fiscal 1990 totals. The company generated 4,927 tons of waste, of which 96.5% was recycled; the final volume disposed of was 138 tons.

Through publication of the Environmental and Social Report 2007 as an educational tool, Otsuka Pharmaceutical will continue to seek solutions to environmental issues and proactively engage in sound practices as we pursue our business activities with a regard for coexistence with the global environment and local communities.

Based on the corporate philosophy of 'Otsuka - people creating new products for better health worldwide' , Otsuka Pharmaceutical is dedicated to contributing to the health of people around the world.
