Tokushima Wajiki Factory
The Otsuka Pharmaceutical Tokushima Wajiki Factory is located in the southern part of Tokushima Prefecture, near the clear-flowing Nakagawa River. Created as a factory park in harmony with its natural environment and local community, 63 percent of the 109,738 square meter factory site is green space and the factory is engaged in a variety of proactive environmental preservation initiatives. Interaction with the local community includes hosting factory tours and organization of outdoor concerts on the grounds. The factory park concept is also embodied in plantings of beautiful weeping cherries and other trees and greenery.
As part of efforts to minimize the environmental impact, the grounds are tended by hand with minimal use of herbicides or other agricultural chemicals. Employee awareness is enhanced by activities to maintain and manage stands of broadleaf trees such as oaks, which are native to the area. The factory is actively involved in community action programs with the aim of environmental preservation, such as tree planting in the NakaNaka Forest area of Naka-cho Sakura Park, which is used as an environmental education site for elementary school students.
Located in an area known for many scenic spots including the rugged gorge carved by the swift-flowing Wajiki Line, the Tokushima Wajiki Factory has adopted numerous environmentally responsible practices such as boosting the recycling rate for waste plastic and maintaining zero-emissions status.
