Otsuka Pharmaceutical's Pioneering Equol Research

Motivated by the goal of ensuring that all women enjoy healthy and comfortable lives, Otsuka Pharmaceutical initiated its groundbreaking equol research in 1996. This research targeted bacteria capable of metabolizing soy isoflavones, leading to the discovery of the lactic acid bacteria, Lactococcus 20-92. Following extensive safety verifications and efficacy tests, Otsuka introduced the world's first* equol-containing food product in 2014, which utilizes a safe and effective strain of lactic acid bacteria for fermentation.

Equol
Equol is a metabolite produced from daidzein, one of the soy isoflavones, through the action of intestinal bacteria. It is generated through soy consumption and supports women's health and beauty more directly and efficiently than soy isoflavones in their original form. Soy intake has long been reported to contribute to maintaining and enhancing women's health, but these benefits are primarily due to equol. Interestingly, data shows that only about 50% of Japanese people can produce equol, meaning that one in every two people does not benefit from consuming soy.
