Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Otsuka) has started to offer new content Frailty Prevention Support VR within the VR (virtual reality) training program FACEDUO, in collaboration with Jolly Good Inc. This new content aims to raise awareness of early signs of frailty through VR-simulated experiences, supporting health maintenance and prevention or deferment of nursing care.

Frailty refers to a state of physical and mental vulnerability associated with aging, positioned between healthy independence and the need for nursing care. Physical frailty occurs due to factors such as muscle weakness, while mental and psychological frailty is associated with changes in mood, such as depression or mild cognitive impairment. Furthermore, social frailty arises when connections with society become weak. These factors influence each other and progress in a chain reaction, leading to a rapid decline in independence. , However, frailty is reversible--by recognizing it early and taking preventive measures, it is possible to slow its progression and improve the condition.*

Under the supervision of Professor Katsuya Iijima, director, Institute of Gerontology (IOG) and professor, Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI) at the University of Tokyo, this program allows users to experience real-life signs of frailty through VR and encourages preventive actions. It focuses on three pillars of frailty prevention: nutrition, physical activity, and social participation, providing opportunities to envision and extend a healthy and independent future.

Frailty Prevention Support VR content is expected to be utilized in various settings, including community health events, regional support centers, and medical and nursing care facilities.
