Otsuka Pharmaceutical Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Targets Earn Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative Certification

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. is proud to announce that greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions reduction targets set by the company have been certified by the Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative.


The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wildlife Fund for Nature(WWF)for achieving the Paris Agreement-mandated objective of limiting the average global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius. It certifies the CO2 emission reduction targets of companies that are in line with emissions reduction scenarios based on scientific facts.

Otsuka obtained SBT Initiative certification for the following emission-reduction targets, which have been deemed to be scientifically valid.

Otsuka's CO2-reduction targets

・ Reduce GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2) 30% by 2030 from a 2017 base year.

・ Reduce GHG emissions (Scope 3) 20% by 2030 from a 2017 base year..

In order to attain these targets, Otsuka is taking steps such as optimization of energy use and incorporation of renewable energy. Otsuka will also continue to minimize emission of GHG throughout its value chain as part of ongoing efforts to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

  Scope1: Direct emissions from business activities

  Scope2 : Indirect emissions such as electricity use

  Scope3: Other indirect emissions such as from supplier and customer activities.
