Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Otsuka) announces the launch of Understanding a New Perspective on Dementia, a new content module for the FACEDUO Dementia Care Support VR program, a joint initiative with Jolly Good Inc. The new program enables participants to experience dementia, through virtual reality (VR), from the first-person perspective of an individual who has been diagnosed with the condition. By doing so, it promotes understanding of a new perspective on dementia: the belief that people can continue living in their communities in a way that reflects their individuality and preferences even after developing dementia. The program also helps participants learn more appropriate and supportive ways of interacting with people living with dementia.

Japan's Basic Act on Dementia to Promote an Inclusive Society, which came into effect in January 2024, calls for the realization of an inclusive society in which all people, including those living with dementia, can demonstrate their individuality and abilities while supporting one another with mutual respect for each person's dignity and uniqueness. The dissemination of this new perspective on dementia is considered one of the key principles of the legislation.

In the past, dementia was often associated with perceptions such as "people with dementia no longer understand anything," "they can no longer do anything on their own," or "it becomes difficult for them to continue living in the community." In recent years, however, studies have suggested that maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning in daily life may help preserve cognitive function and potentially slow cognitive decline.¹ As populations continue to age and dementia becomes a condition that can affect more people, including oneself, family members, and those around us, it is increasingly important to understand this new perspective and consider how people can continue living fulfilling lives while remaining true to themselves after a diagnosis.

This VR content will be deployed as part of the FACEDUO Dementia Care Support VR program and is expected to be utilized in Japan by local governments, healthcare institutions, and long-term care facilities. In addition, Otsuka plans to release a complementary two-dimensional (2D) educational program for healthcare professionals in October 2026. Through real-world clinical case studies, the program will help participants learn psychological support approaches at the time of dementia diagnosis and apply them in clinical practice.
